Israel the Culture War
Today is the third of Novemeber 2005...a momentous day in many ways. To day is the tenth aniversary of the assasination of Itzack Rabin, a leader and a forward thinker of the land of Israel, a man who was before his time here. I wonder what he would think of the fact that Israel is still locked into the thoughts and the mindset of the fanatically religious here, I wonder what he would think if he knew that a young women on her way to study was asked to get off a bus for which she had a valid ticket, wonder what he would say if he knew that the Egged which was established as a Public transportation system in Israel had given over it's control to the fanatic religious who are so demented in their thinking as to be able to stand up in a public bus and pray to G-D that this young women of good intelligence and sound mind would be demeaned into supplication?
I am so saddened by what I see happening here in Israel that I wish that I could leave and never think again about the atrocisty that I see here in the division of men and women, of the inequality of men and women or the exitence of a group that is so able to sway even a public institution to their way by derision and deceit!
Who said that women were less then? Not G-D, certainly not our forefathers, not Abraham who honored his wife above the mother of his first born, not Jacob who worked another seven years for the woman that he loved, no not our fore fathers, they thought that women were IMPORTANT, that we were worth a Prize Above Rubies, That we were made of the clothe of valour and that we would find a way through, around and over any obstical in order to take care of our family!
What has happened that there are men who think that they deserve the Front of the bus? Where are there women who have the strength to stand up against these men who have decided that they are better than us? Where are the women who will wear the cloth of red and purple that was ours of old, where will they come from the ones who will lead us like Miriam with her Tamboruine!
We must not stand still for such ill treatment at the hands of the men of Israel, for if we do, we are doomed...we must rise up and climb on that bus one hundred women strong every day for the next eight days, until the men must walk!!!! We must no let ourselves be overcome with this situation, we have rights, we are human, we are the ones who bear life into this world, we are the ones who suckle at our breasts the children of each generation, we must rise up and overcome this situation!
Come and join me on the express bus to Jerusalem on the tenth of November, let the men walk!!!!! We will give up no seat that we paid for, we shall ride as women into Jerusalem at the front of the bus!!!!
